FCB find themselves in a highly attractive group: Basel face Real Madrid from Group B, the Champions League winners of 2013/2014, last season’s Premier League runners up Liverpool FC, as well as Bulgarian champions PFC Ludogorets Razgrad.
Basel faced the Bulgarian side last season, as a stepping stone into the group stages of the Champions League: Both fixtures did not cause any trouble for FCB, beating Ludogorets 4:2 in Bulgaria and 2:0 at home. The Bulgarian’s play their home games in Sofia as their stadium does not comply with Champions League regulations.
The last time FC Basel 1893 faced Liverpool FC was several years ago. In Basel’s first Champions League appearance in the season of 2002/2003, the Bebbi kicked the Reds out of the competition after a 1:1 draw at Anfield Road and a memorable 3:3 at St. Jakob-Park. Liverpool fans are able to see their team play Champions League football for the first time since season 2008/2009, as they finished second in the Premier League last season.
The most prestigious opponent from group B is no other than the Champions League record holders and title defenders, Real Madrid CF. The Spanish side won the Champions League final last May, against city rivals Atletico Madrid in an emotional game. The match ended 4:1 in extra time. Real Madrid previously faced Basel in the Europa Cup: In the season of 1971/1972 the teams were paired in the first round of the UEFA cup. Both games ended in a 2:1 victory for the Spanish. In recent history both sides have not faced each other. The direct comparison with Spain’s record holders will be a first time experience for most fans.
FCB coach Sousa is looking forward towards the challenges ahead: „We are happy to be a part of one of the best competitions on earth. We want to face this job with a lot of enthusiasm. There is no need to say much about our opponents Liverpool FC and Real Madrid, as in combination they have collected 15 Champions League titles. Ludogorets Razgrad deserves a lot of respect and recognition for their success in the Europa League last season, as well as for qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League. We will be focussed, we know where we stand and are at the beginning of a process. We work very hard, on a daily basis so that we can face the best teams in the world.”
