FC Basel 1893´s board of directors and Paulo Sousa have used the past days and weeks to re-evaluate their collaboration. Based on significant differences between the club and head coach, it was decided that a continuation of the existing working relationship will not be continued next season (2015/2016).
These new developments were not imposed by FCB, especially not after such a successful season. The immediate termination of Paulo Sousa´s contract is an example of how dynamic the business of modern football is. FC Basel is focused on managing the current situation.
Priority now lies in presenting a new head coach before 22. June 2015, when the first training session of the new season is scheduled. It is important to create an environment of clarity for the existing, newly signed and potential new players, by introducing the new head coach a soon as possible. It is important for any player to know who they will be coached by, in order to plan their individual career.
As both FC Basel 1893 and Paulo Sousa have officially agreed to go separate ways, FCB can get back to business and a follow their short term goal of presenting the new head coach as soon as possible. A press release regarding Sousa´s successor as well the future of the assistant coach will be communicated shortly.
During Paulo Sousa´s 12 months in Basel, he was hard working and target orientated, reaching the defined goals. Sousa´s efforts contributed towards winning the sixth consecutive league title, qualification for the last 16 round of the UEFA Champions League and reaching the final of the Würth Cup 2015. FC Basel 1893 can look back on a very successful season. We would like to thank Paulo Sousa and wish him all the best for the future.
Paulo Sousa´s comments after communicating his departure: " I would like to thank the club and the supporters for their trust. I especially would like to thank my players; and for all FC Basel supporters, I hope for the club to continue it´s success."
