FC Basel is on a historical roll; winning their 8th consecutive Super League title. The record for the most consecutive league titles was held by BSC Young Boys, dating back to the last century. FC Basel beat YB´s record four years ago, after lifting 5 trophies in a row. FCB never lost focus, dedicating their energy towards winning the league title year after year.
This year FCB will be celebrating their 20th league title and will be rewarded with a 2nd star above the club logo. A star is usually a symbol of achievements made over generations, however FCB´s 2nd star is a result of their tremendous success since winning their 11th league title in 2004/2005.
A short timeframe between being awarded the 1st and 2nd star
FCB´s current team captain, MatÍas Delgado was one of the players who played for the club when they were awarded their 1st star in the season of 2004/2005. Up until recently both Philipp and David Degen still played for FCB and were a big contribution to the league title 12 years ago. Another contributor to the success of the 2004/2005 season, was Murat Yakin who coached Basel for two seasons.
The last 10 titles were achieved differently; some titles were won under great suspense, decided in the last fixture and in other seasons, like this one, the path to victory was paved well in advance. Never in club history had FCB been crowned champions this early; 6 rounds before the end of the season. Urs Fischer´s team proved to play consistently well. Up until now, after 30 rounds, FC Basel 1893 only lost 1 game, drew 5 and won 24.
Several records can still be broken by the end of the season
After such a successful season, it´s no surprise that several club records can still be broken. The record for the most points achieved from the 2003/2004 season can still be broken; only 9 more points needed. The record for the most goals scored, from 2009/2010 can still be broken: If FCB continue to score an average of 2.56 goals per fixture, this can easily be achieved. The record for the highest goal difference, which currently lies at +54 goals will be beaten if one more point is won.
These are all great stats and it would be the cherry on the cake if these could be achieved. Most importantly winning the cup has highest priority; this would be the 1st double since the days of coach Heiko Vogel in 2012. Beating FC Sion in the cup final would be an achievement of a special kind, as they have never been beaten. This goal is achievable, especially after playing such a consistent season and winning the league, well deserved.
