Since FCB´s 1st team started their pre-season training and played several official fixtures, FC Basel have lost 5 consecutive games (pre-season friendlies, Swiss League & UCL). The club management´s expectations have not been met. The fixtures against FC St. Gallen 1879 and PAOK made it clear that there must be consequences and action must be taken. Club COO Roland Heri and Sports director Marco Streller communicated their decision to coach Raphael Wicky in a transparent and fair discussion.
Roland Heri: „ We would like to thank Raphael Wicky for his efforts and we regret the current developments. We needed to make a professional decision with the club´s future development in mind.”
Marco Streller: „ Now we expect a positive reaction and the strong will to be victorious from every team member in order to achieve this season´s goals. I would also like to thank Raphael Wicky and wish him all the best for the future”.
Until Wicky´s successor is named, Alex Frei will take charge. Frei is an ex-FCB player and current U-18 coach. Frei will step into action as interim coach on Saturday when FCB face Neuchâtel Xamax (away fixture). FCB´s interim coach will be supported by Marco Schällibaum.
