One can imagine that FCB-Supporters will be experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions at the moment. First a successful start to the season, beating Sion 4:1 away from home, then leading 2:1 against Eindhoven but giving away the victory in the later stages of the fixture (2:3) and finally losing 1:2 at home, against FC St. Gallen 1879. It´s difficult to judge the current emotions within the team before this important 2nd leg fixture against PSV. Marcel Koller was optimistic during the pre-match press conference, mentioning that there is only one direction to go… forward. The defeat against St. Gallen was analyzed and now the focus lies on PSV.
The day after the St. Gallen Fixture we were dissapointed. We analysed our defeat then focused on the future. I don’t think our defeat effected the team´s motivation.
The result against PSV (2:3) was not that bad but how it happened was pretty frustrating. On a positive note, FCB had previously been confronted with more difficult challenges to master, than the next challenge against PSV. This doesn’t mean FCB are favorites to win.
Just like FC Basel, PSV Eindhoven experienced a little setback on the weekend. PSV lost 0:2 against rivals AFC Ajax Amsterdam in the Dutch Super Cup. Marc van Bommel started with 7 players who played in the 1st leg UCL qualification fixture against FC Basel.
FC Basel rested several players against St. Gallen. Only 4 players who played against PSV also played against St. Gallen. Valentin Stocker was missing. The FCB Captain was disappointed with the result against St. Gallen but is eager to focus on the future.
It´s a shame we didn’t win any points against st.Gallen. This can´t make us weaker. We will learn from our mistakes and walk away stronger.
It is essential that FCB positively walk away from their recent defeat against St. Gallen as their next fixture is of extreme importance. With a victory against PSV, Marcel Koller´s team can secure themselves a ticket for the Group Stages of the UEFA Europa League and would still be able to reach the Group Stage of the UEFA Champions League.
FC Basel´s initial position prior to the fixture against PSV is somewhat different compared to last season´s fixture against PAOK FC. Last season FCB only scored 1 away goal and was trailing behind for a long time. This was not the case against PSV. FCB´s supporters feel the same and still believe in their team, as 23´800 tickets have already been sold prior to Tuesdays fixture. These are 10`000 tickets more than were sold for the PAOK FC fixture.
