Before the game:
In the last home game of the year and the sixth and final UEFA Europa League group stage fixture, FCB welcomed the Turkish top club Trabzonspor A.S to St. Jakob-Park. There was a premiere: Basel have never previously hosted Turkish club in the group-stage of a European Cup in St. Jakob-Park.
FCB qualified for the round of the last 32 prior to their fixture against Trabzonspor, who have no chance of qualification. Nevertheless, something was at stake on Thursday evening: For Marcel Koller's team it was all about the group victory.
The first half:
FCB got off to a good start, causing danger inside their opponents penalty box. A minute after kick-off Afimico Pululu´s header narrowly missed the goal after a well taken corner kick by Luca Zuffi.
As the first half progressed the visiting team become stronger creating chance after chance: First Donis Avdijaj´s volley (13.) was blocked by Jonas Omlin (13). Doğan Erdoğan hit the crossbar with a solid header (15.) and then FCB defender Raul Petretta cleared the ball from the goalline goal, preventing the Turks from scoring.
Three chances for the visitors but no goals - FCB was more successful : Turkish goalkeeper Erce Kardeşler deflected Arthur Cabral´s header, allowing Silvan Widmer to knock the ball into the back of the net (21.), 1:0!
The 17,921 spectators at St. Jakob Park witnessed a cold (2 degrees ) and entertaining first half, with several chances on both sides. FCB were one goal ahead at half time.
The second half:
Trabzonspor created some chances at the start of the second half but failed to score. FCB were however closer to scoring: Afimico Pululu picked up some pace and hit the crossbar with a solid shot (57.).
Substitute Noah Okafor also had the chance to score: Just minutes after being substituted onto the pitch he created some space in front of goal goalkeeper Erce Kardeşler had no problem saving Okafor´s harmless attempt on target (67.).
70 minutes into the fixture, FCB managed to score again: Basel benefited from an opposing mistake - Taulant Xhaka snatched the ball, set up Noah Okafor on the left, who flanked the ball into the center, where Valentin Stocker worked his magic, 2:0! (72).
Basel´s captain scored the deciding goal. The fixture ended with a well-deserved 2:0.
After the game:
Marcel Koller's team showed a strong performance in the Europa League group-stage, collecting a total of 13 points and thus the group victory.
THE FIRST GAME AND THE FIVE GOALS AT HOME AGAINST FC KRASNODAR WAS A HIGHLIGHT. ALSO THE AWAY game AGAINST GETAFE WAS great for our SELF-CONFIDENCE, especially as the SECOND half was tough and HAd to overcome the finl minutes of the fixture with one man down.
FCB´s next game takes place on Sunday: It´s the last Raiffeisen Super League fixture of the year. FCB face Lucerne, away from home.
