Marcel Koller joined FC Basel 1893 shortly after the start of the 2018/2019 season. The international playoffs for the UEFA Europa League were the final destination of FCB´s European campaign when Basel´s coach first took over but Koller managed to stabilize FCB domestically and at the end of the season his team finished the season in 2nd place behind BSC Young Boys. There was one title under Koller: FCB won the 2019 Cup final against FC Thun and thus secured this trophy for the 13th time.
In the following 2019/2020 season, the coaching staff and the team played an excellent Europa League campaign, winning their group and victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the round of 16. Nationally FCB ended the season at the beginning of August 2020, finishing in third place behind YB and FC St. Gallen 1879. In the Swiss Cup, there is still a chance of defending last year's title - FCB will face FC Winterthur in the semi-finals on Tuesday, 25th of August.
When the last competition of the 2019/2020 season is over in which FC Basel are still represented, FC Basel 1893 and its coaching team will go their separate ways to enable the club to realign their goals and priorities. FCB would like to thank Marcel Koller as well as Thomas Janeschitz and Carlos Bernegger for their services and wishes them all the best for their private and professional future. Marcel Koller and his assistants also thank FC Basel 1893 and wish the club and the team all the best.
In regards to the start of the 2020/2021 season, a new team of coaches will be presented in due course. The FCB asks the media representatives for understanding that no further information on the subject will be given until then.
