The former national team captain Ciriaco Sforza signs a two-year deal with FC Basel 1893. Sforza´s new role starts on September 1st, 2020.
FC Basel 1893 is delighted to have signed one of the most successful Swiss footballers, Ciriaco Sforza (50) as their new head coach. Ciriaco Sforza captained the Swiss national team, collected a total of 79 international caps and participated in the 1994 World Cup as well as the Euro of 96.
„Swiss Player Of The Year“ and „Best Swiss National Team Player“ are some of his personal awards. Sforza won the UEFA Champions League, the Intercontinental Cup, the German League Cup and the German Championship with FC Bayern Munich. As if the success with Bayern Munich wasn’t enough, he also won the German League with 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Coached by no other than Otto Rehhagel, FC Kaiserslautern went from getting promoted to winning the league within a year. German football history at its best.
Sforza also played for the Italian giants Inter Milan where he showed off his strategic talent in central midfield.
After successfully attaining his coaching diploma in Germany, the Italian born football professional, who grew up in Aargau, gained his first experiences as a head coach in Switzerland. In both the Super League and the Challenge League he focused on educating and developing young talent, most recently at FC Will. Ciriaco can relate to young professional footballers. At the age of 16 he made his debut in top flight football with GC(Grasshopper Club Zurich).
